INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY
Within the framework of International Museum Day 2018, the Applied Arts Department of the A’ Technical School of Lefkosia and the Department of Antiquities are co-organizing an event to be held at the Cyprus Museum on the 18th May 2018, between 19:00 and 20:00. The event will include a presentation of the project «The A’ Technical School goes to the Museum», which began in February 2018. As a part of the project, students (specializing in fashion design / jewellery design/ / graphic arts & furniture design) were offered special guided tours by Archaeological Officers of the Department of Antiquities, during which specific objects were highlighted. The students then selected and worked on specific exhibits which they found inspiring and produced designs which they applied onto contemporary objects. Both the above process, as well as samples of the final objects will be presented in the Cyprus Museum on the 18th of May. Selected objects will also be available at the Cyprus Museum Shop. The proceeds from the sales are used to cover the needs of the A’ Technical School Welfare Committee.
The above initiative began in 2015 when, as a part of the History of Art course of the 1st year of the Department of Applied Arts, the students were invited to create designs inspired by exhibits of the Cyprus Museum. A specially appointed committee selected four designs which were then submitted for approval by the Department of Antiquities’ Shop Committee. After the designs were approved, they were applied onto specific products, which then became available in the Department of Antiquities’ Shops. In 2017 a specially designed charm/amulet for the year 2017 was created and added to the collection. The charm was inspired by the famous cruciform figurine from the Pomos area, a highlight of the Cyprus Museum exhibition. The charm, was also selected to be the Paphos2017 official charm and its design was the result of the A’ Technical School’s participation in Junior Achievement Competition, where it received first prize in the best sales category.
An important educational priority of the Department of Applied Arts in Technical and Vocational Education is that students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real working environment and at the same time to develop their artistic and business talents. In this way, students are enabled to face the real challenges of the market.
