Educational Programme: "Idolio to Dolio" at the Cyprus Museum

The educational program "Idolio to Dolio" (transl. “Figuring out the Figurine’) is offered to students of the 4th grade of primary school and it invites the children into the world of figurines as well as making the distinction between figurines and sculptures. The students 'travel back in time' through games and performances. The journey unfolds in almost all of the Museum’s Exhibition Rooms, with the children searching for clues and information through games, riddles and various challenges that require group activities, observation and comparing objects. Their task is to finally ‘figure out’ which figurine they are searching for amongst the Museum’s exhibits. Based on the archaeological remains and the archaeologists’ various interpretations they also guess the possible functions of figurines in antiquity and they are invited to figure out these objects' development up to the present day. Within this context, the children have the opportunity to express themselves freely and creatively in such a way, that the process becomes interactive and meaningful.

The children explore the Museum and in the display shelves, they discover the lost items that belong to their new ancient friends (craters, jugs, amphorae, kylikes, plates etc). These objects demonstrate how linked their friends are with the sea (they are decorated with fish, squid, octopus, scales and mermaids...). Finally, a surprise awaits the children: Zeno and Aspasia show their gratitude to the children by inviting them to an ancient banquet for which replicas of ancient pottery are used.
