2011 marks the seventh anniversary of the “European Night of Museums”, which this year is held under the auspices of the Council of Europe, UNESCO and the International Council of Museums (ICOM). The events organised for the “European Night of Museums” in a way announce International Museum Day, organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) on the 18th of May 2011. Since 2005, when the concept of the “European Night of Museums” was first introduced, the programme effectively united all European museums around a specific subject each year and has been encouraging a diverse public, especially young people, to visit museums and enjoy their collections. In 2010, more than 3000 museums of modern art, ethnography, archaeology, history and science in over 40 European countries have participated in the “European Night of Museums” with various theatrical, film, dance and musical performances and exhibitions, bringing the public closer to museums.
