2010 marks the sixth anniversary of the “European Night of Museums”, which is held this year under the auspices of the Council of Europe and UNESCO. The event will be combined with International Museum Day, organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) on the 18th of May 2009. Since 2005, when the concept of the “European Night of Museums” was first introduced, the programme effectively united all European museums around a specific subject each year and has been encouraging a diverse public, especially young people, to visit museums and enjoy their collections. More than 2500 museums of modern art, ethnography, archaeology, history and science in over 40 European countries have participated in the “European Night of Museums” with various theatrical, film, dance and musical performances and exhibitions, bringing the public closer to museums.

Since 2006, the Department of Antiquities has actively taken part in the celebrations of the European Night of Museums with a variety of events. The Department’s long-term aim is to gradually increase the number of state museums that take part in these events.
