International Museum Day, 2011

The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities announces that, within the framework of International Museum Day, celebrated on the 18th of May, entrance to state museums will be free and the following events will be taking place:

Cyprus Museum:

(1 Museum Street, Nicosia, tel.: 22865888)

The Cyprus Museum will be open from 8.00am until 5.00pm and from 7.30pm until 10.00pm and entry will be free. This year celebrations for International Museum Day and European Night of Museums will be combined.

-Educational programme with primary school students
-Exhibition titled "Museum and Memories: Objects and photographs from the last century" will be organised in the Special Exhibitions Hall (Room XII) with old photographs of the Cyprus Museum as well as old equipment used by Museum staff during the previous century. (The exhibition will be open until the end of June)
The exhibition will be followed by a Department of Antiquities’ publication which will include old photos of all of Cyprus’ state museums.
- In Room VI of the Cyprus Museum a small exhibition will be organised on the history of the conservation and restoration of the famous bronze statue of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus.

- 8.00pm – 10.00pm: Live jazz music with the Stefan Melovski Quartet and reception in the gardens of the Cyprus Museum.

Local Museum of Ancient Idalion

(Idalion tel.: 22444818)

The Museum will be open from 8.00am – 3.00pm and from 4.00pm - 9.00pm. Free entry.

Students will be visiting the museum during the day.

6.00pm – 8.00pm.: Concert and screening of documentary on the Idalion Bronze Tablet.


Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silver-smith Work, Lefkara
(House of Patsalos, Lefkara village, tel.: 24342326)
The Museum will be open from 9.30am until 5.00pm. Free entry.

11.30am. – 1.00pm.: Shadow theatre (Karagkiozis) in the Museum, organized by the Lefkara Cultural Society in collaboration with the Municipality of Lefkara and the Department of Antiquities.

Every year since 1977 International Museum Day is organised worldwide around May 18. This day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society. In 2010, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with almost 30,000 museums hosting events in more than 95 countries. The theme for International Museum Day 2011 is Museum and Memory.

With the hosting of the above events the Department of Antiquities aims to attract people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to its Museums by combining educational and informative activities with lively, modern and enjoyable cultural events.
