The EGERIA network constitutes a factual cooperation of 12 bodies from 8 countries of the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Italy and Cyprus as EU members and Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jerusalem and Egypt as non-EU participants). It aims towards the development of a modern pilgrimage route that includes the most valuable pilgrimage sites-cultural landmarks of the area, using the dynamic and experience of the appropriate bodies that systematically work for cultural heritage. They contribute to regional development, preservation of the cultural scenery and natural environment but furthermore to creating the necessary terms for the social and economic development of the region through the vehicle οf cultural tourism.
The programme’s activities focused on the monuments of the Medieval Euro-Mediterranean region – buildings created within the Byzantine era and reflecting frequent movements and interaction of peoples of widely differing cultural traditions.
