INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MONUMENTS AND SITES
18TH OF APRIL 2012
THEME: WORLD HERITAGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
THE ROLE OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES

In 1983, UNESCO designated the 18th of April as the International Day for Monuments and Sites. The aim was to promote cultural heritage beyond the select group of sites on the World Heritage List and to encourage both individuals and local authorities to learn more about cultural heritage, to appreciate its value and to incorporate it in their lives at social, cultural and financial level.

The theme for this years’ International Day of Monuments and Sites is “World Heritage and Sustainable Development: The Role of Local Communities”, which is also the theme of the events that will be organized throughout 2012 celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.

This theme was chosen to highlight the relationship between World Heritage and Sustainable Development. The aim is to demonstrate that the participation of local communities in the management of World Heritage Properties can and should be positive. The inscription of a site in the World Heritage List bounds both the responsible authorities, as well as local communities for its protection. Local communities as one of the main stakeholders have both benefits and responsibilities deriving from the inscription of a site on the List and their voice is crucial.

The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announces that on the occasion of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, entry to the following archaeological sites and ancient monuments on Wednesday the 18th of April 2012 will be free of charge.
