Strings Workshop Concert - Musical Talent Development Programme, Ministry of Education and Culture (Cyprus Young Strings Soloists)

The wonderful children of the Musical Talent Development Programme, established by the Ministry of Education and Culture, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities organise a concert at the Ancient Theatre of Kourion on Saturday 12th of October at 20:00. The concert is under the aegis of the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Kyriakos Kenevezos. All proceeds will be donated to the Patients’ Welfare Committee of the “Archbishop Makarios III” Hospital, which financially supports the families of children that need to be transported abroad for long term and costly therapies and treatments.

This initiative was embraced by the Department of Antiquities, as the establishment of strong bonds between children and archaeology comprises one of its primary objectives. In particular, part of the broader policy of the Department of Antiquities is to attract youngsters and children, which are the corner stone of our country. The aim of this policy is to promote the development of cultural awareness at an early stage, as it is imperative for the protection and promotion of our archaeological heritage. The inclusion of children in various related activities in archaeological sites and ancient monuments is part of this policy. Most importantly, it extends from its vision concerning social development and solidarity, and reflects the central role of the Department of Antiquities in providing equal access in culture to the society as a whole. As a representative of our cultural heritage, the Department of Antiquities through this collaboration succeeds in achieving the solid connection between the past and the future, which, as the music of these talented children suggests, will be bright and constructive.

The Musical Talent Development Programme – Strings Workshop, established in October 2006, represented the initial stage of a wider project for the development of young musical talents in Cyprus. This pioneering and ambitious project, concerning cultural development in general, provides opportunities to talented children of Cyprus to become involved with music and receive a high-level instruction.

The Violin Workshop is the first stage of the pilot project initiated as part of the afore-mentioned Programme. This year further Workshops will commence, which will include the Viola, the Cello and the Contrabass, under the supervision and guidance of renowned Academics in an international level.

The Musical Talent Development Programme operates under the supervision of Professor Matheos Kariolou of the Music University of Austria. Prof. Kariolou has great experience in teaching the violin to both students and children of a very young age, applying his own personal method of teaching. His assistants, who teach the children on a systematic basis, are: Menelaos Menelaou, Melina Harrer-Kanthou, Costas Dermitzoglou, Sorin Horlea and Varvara Peneva. The high quality performances of the Workshop during the last seven years have spread much enthusiasm to the public.

In the framework of the Workshop’s operation, a group of highly talented children has been selected to form the ensemble “Cyprus Young Strings Soloists”. This ensemble, under the artistic direction of Prof. Kariolou, has already gained international recognition. It has performed in big capitals (Vienna, Brussels, Moscow, Rome, Vatican), in the most famous concert halls in the world before large audiences, receiving excellent comments by famous personalities of the artistic, political and religious sphere. Within a very short time some of these children managed to reach the highest level of the art of Violin due to their talent and the specialized teaching methods of their Professor. Internationally renowned musicians have expressed their enthusiasm and content for the professionalism characterizing the children, despite the young age of the Workshop.

The Ensemble “Cyprus Young Strings Soloists” has performed, with great success, at the Presidential Palace on the occasion of the visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Cyprus, at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the famous “Musikverein” concert hall at Vienna, and the international “Moscow meets friends” festival of the popular Spivakov Foundation in Moscow. In October 2012 the children performed at the Quirinal Presidential Palace in Rome and the Vatican, and received prolonged standing ovations from the audience. In May 2012 the children were invited and took part at a concert in Monza, Italy, together with the Bacau orchestra of Rumania, where the audience was also extremely enthusiastic with their performance.
