Europeana is the common access point to the collections of European libraries, archives, museums, etc. This access point will allow users to search, use and combine this digital information more easily. A prototype of Europeana will be launched in November 2008 and will give direct access to at least 2 million items from Europe's libraries, archives, museums and audiovisual archives.
Europeana is aimed at informed citizens, professionals and researchers who want a powerful and simple way of finding cultural material from different Member States. The digitised heritage can also be used as input for new creative efforts and for a wide range of information products and services. It can for example play a key role in the future growth of sectors such as learning and tourism. Experience proves that online library services work.
