The Department’s activities cover the following fields:
(a) The enforcement of the provisions of the Radiocommunications Laws and its accompanying Regulations.
· Planning and management of the National Frequency Plan and setting provisions of rights of use of spectrum
· Issuance of authorisations for the use of frequencies by all radiocommunication systems and the setting of relevant fees
· Evaluation and introduction on new technologies in Cyprus
· Monitoring of the use of radio spectrum by authorised users and detection of illegal transmissions
· Conduction of measurements and studies regarding the exposure of the public in electromagnetic fields
· Management of the geostationary sattelite orbit
· Market Surveillance regarding radioequipment
(b) The enforcement of the provisions of the Radio and Television Stations Law of 1998, related to the signal distribution network of radio and television broadcasting stations.
(c) The provision of consulting services on telecommunications matters to various Government Departments including the National Guard, the Departments of Civil Aviation and the Merchant Shipping regarding all technical radiocommunications issues.
(d) The representation of the Government in international and regional telecommunications organizations in the field of electronic communications and especially in the field of radiocommunications and is the responsible authority for managing and implementing the obligations of the Republic emanating from the Conventions or other legal instruments of such organizations on technical, regulatory, management and other related issues. These organizations include the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the European Conference of Postal Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT). In addition the Department represents Cyprus in the European Union Committees, Radio Spectrum Policy Group (RSPG), Radio Spectrum Committee (RSC), TCAM and CoCom.
