1001. What are the procedures so that I may work lawfully in Cyprus as an electrician?

To work legally in Cyprus as a licensed electrician you should possess the corresponding Competence Certificate. In order to get the specific Competence Certificate you should submit together with the relevant application, the originals or certified copies of your academic qualifications, certificates of your experience as an electrician and any other certificates you think that they will help in the evaluation of your application. Furthermore, if you are citizen of another state you are required to enclose a certified copy of your Passport or your identity card, as well as supporting documents on the extent of responsibility you were given by the competent authority of your country to carry out electrical works. Moreover, it is pointed out that as long as someone has secured the corresponding Competence Certificate to exercise the profession of electrician, he should also have a valid annual Certificate of Registration, according with the Electricity Regulations 1941-2004 (Regulation 53 (14) (a).

The relevant forms are available at the Head office of the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Nicosia, the District Offices in Larnaca, Famagusta, Limassol and Pafos and soon on the website of the D. EMS.

1004. What procedures are necessary for the issuing of a licence for business operation in electrical works?

To get a license to operate a business in the sector of electrical works, you need to furnish to the Head office of the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services or the District Offices the originals or certified copies of the following: a. Form 25B of the D.EMS you can find in our website which you must complete with all the details. b. A signed certificate that the owner, ifis a licensed electrician is responsible for the business. If the owner does not have the relevant Registration Certificate, then a license to operate a business may be issued as long as the owner has in his service, on a regular basis, a licensed electrician, as the responsible electrician. c. A Certificate of Incorporation which is issued by the Registrar of Companies. d. the certificate for the registration of the responsible electrician which must have been issued before the date of filing the application for the issue of a licence for business operation in electrical works. e. Certification of Employment of the responsible electrician which has been issued by the corresponding District Labour Office.

1005. What are the prerequisites for getting a Certificate of Competence as an electrical technician?

To get a Certificate of Competence as an electrical technician you must be more than eighteen (18) years old and a. You should have at least a certificate of completion of the full training cycle of the State Apprenticeship System as an electrical technician. Or b. You should supply evidence that you have served as an apprentice for at least three (3) years in the service of a Registered Contractor and persuade the Licensing Authority that you have adequate practical knowledge and experience in cable wiring.

1006. What are the prerequisites for getting a Certificate of Competence of a maintainer of electrical equipment and apparatuses 1st Grade?

The prerequisites for getting a Certificate of Competence of a Maintainer of electrical equipment and apparatuses (1st Grade) are: a. You should be registered as a Maintainer of electrical equipment and apparatuses (2nd Grade) or be a graduate of a state Middle Technical School in the field of electrical engineering and be at least nineteen (19) years old and b. You should have a prior service of at least three (3) years in the maintenance of electrical equipment and apparatuses to the satisfaction of the Licensing Authority and c. You should pass the relevant examinations on the subject organised from time to time by the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services.

1007. What are the prerequisites for getting a Certificate of Competence of a maintainer of electrical equipment and apparatuses 2nd grade?

The prerequisites for getting a Certificate of Competence of maintainer of electrical equipment and apparatuses 2nd Grade are the following: a.You should be a graduate of a State Middle Technical School in the specialty of electrical engineering and b. have at least one (1) year of post school practical training in the maintenance of electrical apparatuses and equipment to the satisfaction of the Licensing Authority. or c. You should be at least nineteen (19) years old and have at least three (3) years of practical training in the maintenance of electrical appliances and equipment to the satisfaction of the Licensing Authority and d. You should pass the relevant examination on the subject organised from time to time by the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services.

To get a Certificate of Competence of a Electrical Installations Contractor you should be at least twenty one (21) years old and a. You should be a graduate of a State Middle Technical School in the specialty of electrical engineering and have at least one (1) year of post school practical training in electrical installations to the satisfaction of the Licensing Authority or b. You should be a registered electrical engineer and have at least three (3) years of post school service in electrical installations to the satisfaction of the Licensing Authority or c. You should have at least six (6) years of service in electrical installations to the satisfaction of the Licensing Authority and in addition to the above you should pass the relevant examination on the subject organised from time to time by the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services
